Search Engine Optimization is by no means easy. But, it is also not impossible to learn SEO via the Do-It-Yourself method. Luckily in the Information Age, it is easy to find usable information on just about any subject matter, and finding SEO tips and tools of the trade are no different.

The big question is: Is DIY SEO worth it?

The short answer is, (and here’s the kicker); YES. IF… If you have enough time and you know how to wade through the realms of information on SEO, then yes, it is possible for the business owner, or someone working for him/her to do the necessary research and implement the basics of SEO.

In the end, it comes down to choice or circumstance. Perhaps you don’t have the budget to hire a professional, but you are willing to sacrifice weeks of studying and implementing and then months of waiting for results? If that is doable, then go for it! Fortune favors the Go-Getter!

But before you decide to DIY your SEO, consider the following:

  1. SEO tips and courses are freely available online

The great news is that you don’t a formal education in SEO to make it work. You don’t need a bachelor’s degree like me. You don’t even need to do a college course in Basic SEO. All the information you need is out there!

The problem is finding the right source material that is relevant. So when doing searches for SEO tips, remember to check your dates for relevancy and do some research on the people or organizations who publish the information. (Believe it or not, there is a lot of deliberate SEO misinformation out there…so be wary.)

Our top choices for finding free SEO info and optimization tips:

1.1. Open a free account at SEMrush.com and make use of their SEMrush Academy. We’ve done their FREE courses and they are worth GOLD! (and no, we’re not affiliated to them in any way and no not get anything in return for even mentioning them. We merely love using SEMrush as an essential SEO Tool.

1.2. Another must visit for more FREE SEO resources, is Moz.com. Once again no affiliation or anything, we just love their tools and resources. Head on over to https://moz.com/learn/seo for a great SEO knowledgebase and optimization tips.

After you’ve covered everything about SEO on those two sites, you’ll know just about everything there is to know about the niche. Plus, you’ll have the know-how to implement the basics. Thus, by combining your new-found SEO knowledge with a bit of practice, you can quickly become well versed and carry out your own basic SEO optimization, without any external help.

2. Time

It waits for no man (or woman), does it? As a business owner, you need to weigh up the importance of your time. Will you have days (yes, full days) to spend on learning the basics of SEO? The answer should be yes, if you can. Time is a valuable resource and as a business owner, I’m sure you’ll agree that there is never enough hours during a day.

However, even if you decide to use an SEO professional, you should at least know the basics (just so that they can’t BS you and make impossible claims or overcharge you. (Some in the industry are unscrupulous, which is why we are proud members of Web Integrity – but that’s a story for another day.)

Point is – take the time to know the essentials of SEO. And if you have the luxury of free time, use it, learn how to implement the basics, and optimize your own website as much as you can!

3. Budget

Oh boy. The contentious issue of whether any money should be spent on marketing at all, is an old worn-out, and to be honest, irrelevant topic.

Modern businesses simply cannot expect revenue and brand recognition without some form of a marketing effort. Even if it is placing free Facebook classified ads on your local town/city business group. Marketing doesn;t always have to cost money, there are ways to get at least some exposure without spending a fortune. Some marketing methods however, are more efficient than others.

It’s no different when it comes to SEO. That is why we recommend you do the basics, as recommended by industry leading companies such as SEMrush, MOZ and others. It’s better getting the right info from the source in this case, the actual companies used by SEO agencies, rather than from the middleman. Basic SEO is quite cheap (as already illustrated), whereas more advanced strategies will incur larger expenses, and will unfortunately require the expertise of a professional.

How much your SEO budget will entail, is difficult to say off-hand. It all depends on the existing competition in your niche. The more competition, the more difficult to rank in your niche, the larger the SEO expense.

The good news from a budget point of view, is that getting your website to rank organically, is much cheaper than going the Cost-Per-Click / Paid for Ads route. And that is where Oasis SEO comes in.
